augustus tiberius caligula Early this morning, I watched disc six of the thirteen disc anime series Fullmetal Alchemist and the further along I get into the story the more that I am enjoying it. At the heart of the series is the bond between the two Elric brothers and their quest to restore their bodies. Because of the genuine way that they behave towards one another watching the two of them interact is some great viewing. Since they are so close, the sudden distrust of Ed by Al was painful to watch and I was shocked that I could care so much about animated characters. Thankfully this rift between them was quickly brought to a close. Besides the strength of the two leading characters, there is a great cast of supporting characters that make the world that they inhabit that much more real. Sometimes fictional characters have a tendency to meet the same people over and over and that element tends to destroy the believability of what is happening. ... Having someone walk through my place while I am not home is an odd experience. Yes, I know that it needs to be done if I ever want my place to sell, but on some level it does still feel like a violation of sorts. For example, when I returned to my place after the latest showing, I was a little disappointed to find that the light had been left on in the bathroom and a closet door was left open. Both of those things are very minor, but they still felt slightly disrespectful to me. Why couldn't they leave the place as they found it? Is that too much to ask of a person? ... While the showings were taking place, I was killing time in the best way that I know how by spending it in the library. In the space of two hours, I managed to read parts of the latest issue of Astronomy magazine skim some of the articles in the latest issue of The New Yorker and read part of the Owen Lattimore book The Desert Road to Turkestan. All of it was quality reading. In fact, I liked the small amount of the Lattimore book that I had read enough to check it and take it home with me even though I am in the middle of another book already. Something about a man crossing a desert with a camel caravan intrigued me. ... Roman history has always interested me and to add to my knowledge I watched a four-part documentary on the Roman Empire in the first century that I thought gave a great overview of that time in history. Now maybe others can easily name all of the emperors in order from that period in time, but I couldn't until I saw the documentary. Having read some reviews, I have since learned that there was some glossing over of a few important people, but in my opinion that did not detract from the documentary. Other negatives were the repeated usage of some of the same still shots to represent different events. I noticed them, but know that documentaries by nature have limited budgets so they have to do the best that they can with their visuals and this includes recycling stock footage. |
