home phone repair Driving home at one-thirty in the morning under a cold dark winter sky. It was a nice change of pace for me, because I never get to see the sky at night anymore. Even though I work at night, there aren't any windows where I sit so the sky is hidden from me. Actually most of the time it doesn't feel like night at all while I am there. Time loses meaning for me until I leave in the morning and see the sunrise. ... The weekend came here suddenly. Stating the obvious again, five days at work go by much faster than ten do. Since I was going to be home for most of the day, I wanted my phone back up and running as soon as possible. This meant a quick trip to the basement to check the network interface. After some looking around I found what seemed to be the place to test my line. I unplugged one of the lines and connected my phone. There was a dial tone. Once I had access to the outside world, I made a phone call to the telephone company to see what they had to say. At first they said that the problem had been fixed late Sunday night. Then I told them that I still didn't have a dial tone and they changed their mind. They said that they would test again and then call me back. I asked if this was possible since I wasn't really calling from my line. She said that they could. About an hour or so later, I found out that I was right and she was wrong. Ten minutes went by and nothing happened. A half hour went by and then the telephone rang. It wasn't the telephone company. It was someone looking for my downstairs neighbor. It was then that I realized that I had tapped into the downstairs line and not my own. Soon after that call a tech from the telephone company arrived at the house and I watched him install some new wiring. From what I can gather my downstairs neighbors must have had a second line stopped sometime last week. Little did they know that my line was somehow connected to that same line. As to why the phone company installed the line that way is still a mystery to me. I may not have known how to fix the problem, but I knew that something was wrong just by looking at the wiring in the basement. ... The last thing that I did before I fell asleep for the day was finish reading The Handmaid's Tale. For me it was funny in the same way that I found A Clockwork Orange to be funny. Here we have a society that thinks that they are doing something good, but in fact they cause more damage than what existed before they took over and put their belief system into place. I also know that what the book portrayed is very possible and as the author points out at the end of the book has already happened in some parts of the world. As to whether or not people will learn anything from reading the book has yet to be seen. Then again it probably doesn't have the same pop culture appeal that A Clockwork Orange did. I have yet to see Lisa Simpson in a Handmaid costume despite the fact that Bart has been Alex.
